Why rent a car in Mykonos?

Mykonos is a pretty small island and can be easily explored by car.  Renting a car is the best way to sightsee as many places lack bus service and taxis are scarce, especially during high season.  MykonosX highly recommends renting a car to have the freedom to visit the island at your own pace and discover everything Mykonos offers, from the rural mainland to the stunning beaches scattered around the coastline.

Here are our 6 tips for booking a car in Mykonos for an enjoyable vacation!

  1. Manage your booking online

You can find the right car at the right price, and you can cancel or change your car or dates online quickly and easily.  But, before finalizing your booking, read the fine print, terms, and conditions imposed by the rental company.

You can reserve your car in advance, and if you want a specific model/fuel type, you need to specify it.  MykonosX.com strongly advises renting a small car, as it is much easier to drive along the windy roads and park on narrow streets.  MykonosX allows you to compare pricing from different major car rental companies and offers 24/7customer support during the rental term.

  1. Necessary documents to rent a car in Mykonos.

Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 and to have held their license for at least 1 year. Foreign drivers need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP), but drivers with an EU license do not need an IDP.  Some car rental companies may charge younger drivers (under 25) a young driver’s additional charge, and an IDP is required.  IDPs generally last for only one year, so make sure if you already have one that it’s valid. Of course, do not forget your passport and credit card when you pick up the car at the location of your choice.

  1. Payment methods for renting a car

When you book a car, an advanced payment is required, and the remaining amount is to be paid off at the location. If you use a credit card, the amount is debited upon car availability.  It is good to know that the rental co. may hold an amount from your credit card as a guarantee.  This amount is calculated based on the model/type of car requested and refunded at the end of the rental, but it can take up to 14 days, depending on the issuing CC bank.  MykonosX does not charge any credit card fees or booking fees.

  1. Check the cancellation policy

The amount refunded due to cancellation is usually estimated based on the number of days before your arrival date. You need to contact the company by email to request a refund if it is applicable.

The car rental company can cancel the rental if you do not arrive at the designated time, or location, and fail to have the necessary documentation and a valid credit card in your name with available funds for the car’s total expenses. MykonosX offers free cancellation up to 48 hours before the arranged pick-up.

  1. Altering your booking details

In case you need to change any booking details, all changes should be in writing via email before the start of your rental. The notification is usually required at least 72 hours before your rental start by most car rental companies.  Any changes regarding pick-up or drop-off location, car type, rental period, and driver’s details can be modified, at any time, but pricing could change.

  1. Cautious driving is a must.

If you intend to leave the main roads, you may find yourself in some rough country lanes regarding road quality and windiness.  It is good to ask about the route before venturing out.  In the case of certain rental cars (model/type), some companies do not permit driving off the beaten track or on a beach, in which case they can demand extra charges.
